Patent Workaround Project
As part of my Engineering Management coursework (ENGR–330), I analyzed an existing patent and developed a workaround design that preserved functionality while avoiding infringement. The patent I studied covered a straw-and-lid combination with spill-prevention and accessibility features.
Why I Chose This Patent
I selected this patent because it aligns with my passion for sustainability and inclusive design. Single-use plastics pose a major environmental challenge, and I was inspired by the potential to reimagine everyday products to reduce waste while also making them easier to use for individuals with motor impairments.
My Workaround Approach
To design around the independent claims, I introduced a series of modifications, including:
Redesigned Lid Geometry – Replacing the patented raised circular top with a half-circle profile and swapping the oval drink opening for a rectangular one with filleted edges.
Material Innovation – Switching from polystyrene to food-grade silicone, allowing the lid to stretch and adapt to various straw sizes (from standard to jumbo boba straws) while retaining shape and tight sealing.
Improved Funnel Design – Adjusting the funnel diameter and curvature for better grip, flexibility, and maneuverability of the straw inside the cup.
Impact of My Redesign
This project demonstrates my ability to:
Interpret and break down patent claims.
Propose engineering design modifications that maintain usability.
Apply sustainability principles by selecting more eco-friendly and adaptable materials.
Incorporate user-centered design to promote inclusivity.
The final concept balances environmental responsibility, intellectual property awareness, and human-centered engineering.
